Can I search in English?

The listings are written in Japanese, so a Japanese keyword will match more of them than an English one.

How do I filter by genre?

Pass genre_id. You can get genre IDs from the Rakuten categories source.

Do I pay for lookups that come back empty?

No. You are charged per result, so a request that finds nothing costs nothing. Testing this against a messy list is free to get wrong.

1 point per returned record, which is $1 per 1,000, capped by max_items. A search with no matches costs nothing.

keyword is the only required field. max_items caps the result count (up to 500, defaults to 25) and sets what you're billed for. sort takes relevancy, price_low_to_high, price_high_to_low, newest, review_count or review_score; price_min and price_max are in JPY; genre_id comes from the Rakuten categories source.
