The sample is a sold-out item, with status sold_out. What you get depends on whether Mercari still shows the page when you ask.

What currency are prices in?

Mercari Japan prices come back in JPY, with the currency code alongside.

Do I pay for lookups that come back empty?

No. You are charged per result, so a request that finds nothing costs nothing. Testing this against a messy list is free to get wrong.

What does a lookup cost?

5 points per successful run, which is $5 per 1,000, and only items that resolve are charged.
